Awesome Solar Air Heater for Off Grid Living, Tiny Houses, RVs and more..
Learn more about this awesome solar air heater that is self-contained and self-powered, and captures free heat from the sun to heat any space from an off-grid cabin, cottage, basement, garage, tiny house, or just a regular every day house. It's easy to use and only needs to be installed on a South-facing facade to function.
Designed & produced by the Quebec solar power company Eco Solaris (http://www.ecosolaris.ca/), this solar air heater is really affordable and can heat 30% of a 1000 square foot area, meaning it could reduce your heating bill by 30% for every 1000 square feet of living space (but it obviously only works during the day).
The photovoltaic solar panel produces electricity to power the fans inside the unit, while the heat panel absorbs heat from the sun which in turn heat...

In this video I decided to make a solar heating panel with design features that will be compatible with sky cooling later on. Solar heating is a very efficient method of using solar energy, with the ability to absorb 900-1000w/m2 of heat from sunlight, compared to only 200-300w/m2 of electricity that could be generated from a similarly sized standard solar panel.

Heating Seattle backyard studio with soda cans as solar panels

Why Don't We All Use Solar Water Heaters?
Want to support my work? You can sign up for a paid subscription to my newsletter and YouTube channel here - https://www.distilled.earth/
If you look at the rooftops of buildings in Israel, you’ll notice something. All of them have solar water heaters. In Greece and Cyprus you'll see the same thing.
But in the United States, less than 1% of homes use the sun to heat their water, even in sunny states like California, Texas, and Arizona. Why?
That's a question I've been wondering for a while. So this week, I decided to find the answer.

Nakoair Solar Air Heater Review - Bought on Amazon
Arctica Solar purchased this OS20 Nakoair Solar Air Heater off of Amazon for $390 including delivery in Jan, 2021. We wanted to see how it works, performs and looks and put out this review!
Unfortunately we cannot recommend this product, it had a number of issues:
- Arrived with damage to the heater itself (ventilation intake grill) and components (damper)
- LCD thermostat was hard to read, and buttons were not terribly responsive.
- LCD thermostat could not be readily configured to turn the heater on. Provided instructions were difficult to understand. We had to hot-wire the heater to get it to turn on for testing.
- It didn't get that hot, we saw a temp boost of 10 - 15 F depending on sunlight. We think this is due to a lack of frontal area (heater just isn't that big), lack of i...

The photovoltaic solar panel produces electricity to power the fans inside the unit, while the heat panel absorbs heat from the sun which in turn heats up the air circulating through the panel before blowing it into whatever space you want it to heat. To see how the panel works, check out this short video made by the company:

We think this is an incredibly efficient and easy to use heat source that uses clean renewable energy and using these solar panels will help reduce our dependence on hydro and fossil fuel heat sources. We hope to see them installed on more and more houses in the future!

Peter Rowan left his job as a "corporate weenie" in 2010 to live a life with less stuff and fewer expenses and with more time to pursue his dreams.
Since downsizing his life, he's begun writing fiction from home (in addition to a teaching gig) so for a bit more privacy, this year he decided to single-handedly convert the family's unused garage into his off-grid writing retreat. Crafting it mostly out of repurposed materials, he decided to heat it using a home-made, recycled can solar panel.
After collecting 275 cans (soda, juice, mineral water, and beer), he began to drill holes into the ends, glue them together and fit them into a box crafted from plywood and 2 by 4's. Adding a bit of black spray paint and some plexiglass, he created his home-made solar panel. He salvaged a couple of fans from an old computer to create a system for pushing cold air into the solar panel and pushing the hot air out and into his office.
In this video, Mary Rowan used her iphone to film her husband's month-long process of building a solar heater with recycled cans. Granted Seattle may not be the ideal spot for solar, but Peter says that it seems to heat up the space by about 5 or 6 degrees even on a "crummy day" and when the sun is out it can provide too much heat.

We think this is due to a lack of frontal area (heater just isn't that big), lack of insulation in the heater (no visible insulation internal to the heater to prevent heat loss) and lack of a high efficiency absorber coating.
The heater was a great price point, and aspired to a lot of functionality, but fell flat on execution.
